Florida Fall Skincare Routine: How to Repair Summer Damage When Dry Season Arrives
By Deana Clark, Licensed Aesthetician & CME · Updated October 2026 · 10 min read
Every October, the questions in my treatment room change. Clients stop asking about sweat and humidity breakouts. Instead, they want to know why their skin suddenly feels tight, looks dull, and shows spots that weren't there in May. The answer is simple. Summer left its mark, and Florida's dry season is about to make it more obvious.
After more than thirty years of caring for Florida skin, I treat this month as a reset. Below is the Florida fall skincare routine I build for my own clients, along with the reasons behind every step.
The Quick Answer
A Florida fall skincare routine has two jobs: repair what summer did and protect against what dry season does. Switch to a creamy, non-stripping cleanser. Add a hyaluronic acid serum and a richer moisturizer. Use brightening and renewal serums like vitamin C and bakuchiol at night, and exfoliate gently once or twice a week. Above all, keep broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning, because October UV in Central Florida still reaches the high range.
What Florida's Dry Season Actually Does to Your Skin
Up north, fall means cold air and falling leaves. Here, the change is quieter. Florida doesn't really have four seasons. Instead, we have a wet season and a dry season, and the switch usually happens in mid-October.
Dew point is the best measure of how much moisture is in the air. All summer, your skin sat in that moisture. Then a cold front pushes through and the air dries out. As a result, your skin starts losing water faster than it can replace it. That's why so many of my clients feel tight and flaky in October, even on an 85-degree afternoon.
There's a second shift, too. The moisturizer that felt perfect in August was chosen for humidity, so it was designed to be light. In dry air, light often isn't enough.
Signs Your Skin Is Carrying Summer Damage
Summer damage rarely shows up all at once. It builds quietly, then becomes visible when the humidity drops. Look for these signs:
- New or darker spots on your cheekbones, forehead, chest, or hands
- A dull, uneven tone that makeup doesn't quite hide
- Rough texture or flaky patches, especially around the nose and mouth
- Fine lines that look deeper than they did in spring
- A tight, stretched feeling after cleansing
- Dry lips, elbows, and shins
If you recognize three or more, your skin is asking for a reset. One important note first: if any spot is changing in size, shape, or color, please have a dermatologist check it before you treat it cosmetically. Safety always comes before fading.
Why Fall Is the Best Time to Repair Your Skin in Florida
Dermatologists often call fall the repair window, and in Florida it's a real one. The sun eases a little, and most of us spend less time at the beach and the pool. Because of that, brightening and renewal ingredients finally get a chance to work without summer undoing them every weekend. Pigment that has been building since May can start to fade.
However, "less intense" doesn't mean "safe." October UV in Orlando averages around 6, which is still in the high range. That's why sunscreen stays in your routine all year. Repair without protection is like mopping the floor with the faucet still running.
Your Summer-to-Fall Skincare Swap
You don't need to throw out your whole routine. Most of my clients only change a few steps. Here's how I adjust each one:
| Step | Summer in Florida | Fall & Dry Season |
|---|---|---|
| Cleanser | Foaming or clarifying, to cut sweat and oil | Creamy and non-stripping |
| Hydration | Lightweight, often skipped | Hyaluronic acid serum every morning |
| Moisturizer | Light lotion or gel | Richer cream, especially at night |
| Treatment | Gentle, sun-cautious actives | Brightening and renewal serums at night |
| Exfoliation | Easy to overdo | Once or twice a week, gently |
| SPF | Every day | Still every day |
| Body & lips | Often forgotten | Hydrate after every shower |
The Ingredients I Lean On in Fall
These are the products I reach for when a client comes in with post-summer skin. Each one has a specific job in the reset.
A creamy cleanser that doesn't strip
Your cleanser sets the tone for everything after it. In dry season, a foaming wash can strip the oils your barrier needs. So in October, I move most of my clients to a cream cleanser.
From my line
Mandarin Moisturizing Cream Cleanser
Made for dry, dehydrated, sun-damaged, and mature skin. It dissolves dirt, makeup, and excess oil without drying, while mandarin oil helps your skin hold onto moisture. Use it morning and night.
Hyaluronic acid to put water back in
Hyaluronic acid binds water to your skin. After a long summer, that matters, because dehydrated skin makes every fine line look deeper. I explain how it works in my article on what to know about hyaluronic acid.
From my line
Acqua Essence HA Serum
An oil-free hyaluronic acid serum with vitamin B5, peptides, and antioxidants. Apply two to three pumps to your face, neck, and décolleté after cleansing.
Niacinamide to calm and even your tone
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is my daytime workhorse. It helps your skin retain moisture, calms redness, and brightens uneven tone. My complete niacinamide guide covers it in depth.
From my line
Clearing Niacinamide Complex
Ten percent niacinamide with aloe, zinc PCA, and hyaluronate. Apply it to clean, dry skin, then give it about ten minutes to absorb before layering anything else.
Vitamin C at night to fade summer's spots
Vitamin C interrupts excess pigment production and fights free-radical damage from sun and pollution. My Vital C Serum is designed as a nighttime product. Apply it before bed and rinse it off in the morning. For the deeper science, read my guide on how vitamin C works in the skin.
From my line
Vital C Serum
A golden serum with stabilized vitamin C, aloe, and red rice stem cells. It helps boost natural collagen production and combats the effects of sun damage and pollution. Use it at night and avoid direct sun while using it.
Bakuchiol for renewal without the irritation
Fall is the classic season to start a retinoid, because sun exposure eases. Bakuchiol gives you a similar renewal benefit without the irritation and sun sensitivity that make traditional retinoids tricky in Florida. To see how the two compare, read Bakuchiol vs Retinol. If bakuchiol is new to you, start with What Is Bakuchiol?
From my line
Bakuchiol Brightening Serum
Bakuchiol with aloe, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and moringa oil. It helps reduce the look of dark spots, supports new cell growth, and restores elasticity. It's gentle enough for morning and evening use.
A richer moisturizer for dry-season nights
This is the swap my clients notice fastest. A cream with more cushion slows water loss, so your skin wakes up soft instead of tight.
From my line
Aloe Me to Calm
Aloe, hyaluronate, and allantoin in a soothing cream that helps protect skin from the drying effects of wind and cold weather. It also relieves chapped, rough spots. Use it morning and night.
From my line
Ultra Rich Dreams
My ultra-rich night crème with squalane, hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and glycoproteins. It's especially effective for dry, dehydrated, aged, or sun-damaged skin. Leave it on overnight and rinse in the morning.
Gentle exfoliation to lift the dullness
Exfoliation clears the dull, rough surface that summer leaves behind, and it helps your serums absorb. Still, gentle is the rule. Over-scrubbing in dry air is a fast path to irritation.
From my line
Enzyme the Grime & Glowing Glycolic Polish
Enzyme the Grime is an aloe-enhanced enzyme scrub for face and body that's gentle enough for sensitive skin. The Glycolic Polish pairs alpha hydroxy acids with walnut shell powder and suits combination and oily skin. For either one, exfoliate your face once a week for normal skin or twice for combination or oily skin.
Don't forget your body and lips
Dry season shows up on your shins, elbows, and lips before anywhere else. A few seconds after each shower makes a real difference.
From my line
Body Quench & LipTide Lip Treatment
Body Quench is a fragrance-free, oil-free hyaluronic acid gel serum for your whole body. Smooth it on after every shower. LipTide is a peptide treatment that revives dry, cracked lips, and it works overnight on elbows and cuticles, too.
Your Florida Fall Reset Routine, Step by Step
Here is the exact framework I give my clients. It works with the products above or as a general blueprint.
Morning
- Cleanse gently. Use a cream cleanser with lukewarm water.
- Apply niacinamide. Smooth it onto clean, dry skin and let it absorb.
- Add hydration. Press in a hyaluronic acid serum.
- Moisturize. Use a soothing cream that holds water in.
- Protect. Finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30+, every single day.
Evening
- Cleanse thoroughly. Remove sunscreen, makeup, and the day.
- Exfoliate, one or two nights a week. Skip it any night your skin feels sensitive.
- Apply vitamin C. Smooth Vital C Serum over your face, neck, and chest.
- Layer bakuchiol. Apply Bakuchiol Brightening Serum and let it absorb.
- Seal it in. Finish with a rich night cream.
One more tip: introduce new products one at a time, about a week apart. That way, if your skin reacts, you'll know exactly why. If you're over 40, my article on your skin after 40 in Florida pairs well with this routine.
What to Expect, and When
Realistic timelines keep you consistent, so here's what I see in my treatment room.
Skin feels softer and less tight. Flaky patches start to settle.
Tone looks brighter and texture feels smoother to the touch.
Summer spots look visibly lighter. Melasma takes longer and needs steady maintenance.
Take a photo in the same light every two weeks. Progress you can't feel day to day becomes obvious side by side. For a deeper plan on stubborn pigment, read my guide on how to fade dark spots and melasma in Florida.
Fall Skincare Mistakes I See Every Year
Dropping sunscreen when it cools off. The temperature falls, but the UV doesn't follow. Daily SPF protects every bit of progress you make this season.
Scrubbing harder to fix dullness. Aggressive scrubbing inflames the skin, and inflammation creates more pigment. Gentle and consistent always wins.
Taking hot showers on the first cool morning. Hot water strips the oils your skin is already short on. Keep it warm, not steaming, and moisturize right after.
Waiting for "real" cold before switching. In Florida, real cold may never come. Make your swaps when the humidity drops, not when the thermometer does.
Starting everything at once. Five new products in one week can overwhelm your barrier. Add one at a time instead.
When You Want Faster Results
Home care fades summer damage gradually, and for many people that's all it takes. Some spots, however, sit deeper than a serum can reach quickly. For those, professional laser treatment is the accelerator. Many people plan pigment treatments for the cooler months, when they spend less time in intense sun while the skin recovers. Melasma always starts with a professional evaluation, because the wrong approach can flare it.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does dry season start in Florida?
In Central Florida, the median start date of dry season is October 15 in both Orlando and Daytona Beach. It usually arrives with the first strong cold front of fall and lasts until about mid-May. North Florida, including Jacksonville, typically shifts a little later in October.
Do I need to change my skincare routine for fall in Florida?
Yes, but only a few steps. When the humidity drops, switch to a creamy cleanser, add a hyaluronic acid serum, and use a richer moisturizer at night. Keep your daily sunscreen exactly where it is.
Is fall a good time to start bakuchiol or retinol?
Yes. Fall is the classic season to begin renewal ingredients because sun exposure eases. In Florida, bakuchiol is a gentle option that supports renewal without the irritation and sun sensitivity of traditional retinoids. Introduce it slowly and always wear SPF.
Do I still need sunscreen in October in Florida?
Absolutely. The average October UV index in Orlando is around 6, which is still in the high range. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ protects your skin and the progress you make repairing summer damage.
How do I repair summer sun damage at home?
Combine brightening ingredients like vitamin C and niacinamide with a renewal ingredient like bakuchiol, plus gentle exfoliation once or twice a week. Keep your skin well hydrated and wear SPF every morning. Most people see visibly lighter spots in 8 to 12 weeks.
Why does my skin feel dry in fall when it's still warm?
Because humidity matters more than temperature. When dry season begins, dew points fall sharply from summer levels. Drier air pulls water from your skin faster, so it can feel tight and flaky even on a warm afternoon.
How often should I exfoliate in the fall?
Once a week for normal skin and twice a week for combination or oily skin. Skip it whenever your skin feels sensitive. Over-exfoliating in dry air causes irritation, and irritation can create more pigment.
Should I switch to a heavier moisturizer in fall?
For most people, yes, especially at night. A richer cream slows water loss in dry air. If your skin is oily, a hyaluronic acid serum under your usual moisturizer may be enough.
